How to Apply

Financial Aid Application Process

We're happy to help you navigate through this process. It can be intimidating and confusing, and we hope that we can be helpful as you complete these steps. If you follow the steps below, we'll be in a good place to help you make college as affordable as possible.

  • For any of the Federal Financial Aid programs (including the Stafford and PLUS Loans), submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate year to the Federal Processor. For the 2017-2018 academic year, you will need your 2015 federal income tax return(s).  If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you are strongly encouraged to do so.  If you are chosen for verification and have used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, the verification process is easier to complete.
  • To submit the FAFSA online (the preferred method), first go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and obtain a FSA ID if you do not already have one. If you are a dependent student, your parent must also obtain a FSA ID.  It is very important to keep a record of your FSA ID.  This FSA ID will be required for logging in, making corrections or submitting a new FAFSA the next academic year.
  • Then complete the FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. SLCC’s school code is 012580.
  • About 30% of all FAFSAs are selected by the Federal Processor for verification. If you are selected, you will be required to furnish a verification worksheet and and possibly other documents. The Financial Aid Office will notify you if you are selected and will inform you of the documents you must furnish to the college.
Submit the FAFSA
A paper FAFSA can be obtained by calling 1-800-433-3243 or by visiting here. Or you can access a PDF version of the FAFSA here. If you cannot submit it 30 days before you expect to enroll, you can complete the paper FAFSA and send it to the SLCC Financial Aid Office for electronic processing; results can be obtained the next day.
