Job Title:  Pastor

Goal of the job:   The pastor is the leader of pastoral ministries of the church and works with the church membership, staff and leadership to fulfill the mission of the church as defined in the church’s constitution and by-laws.  The pastor provides pastoral care in meeting the needs of persons in the church and community and for providing leadership for the church.

Department:  Church Staff

Responsible to:  The Deacons of ESIC Baptist Church and through the deacon body to the congregation of ESIC Baptist Church.  Deacons shall regularly consult with the pastor on a quarterly basis and are responsible for a yearly evaluation of the pastor.

Time required:  This position is an exempt (salaried) and part-time position with a recommended 20 – 24 hours per week on a flexible work schedule.  This time will occasionally vary and is dictated by Church activities and events.  Must be reasonably available to work nights and weekends for emergency pastoral care or delegating these responsibilities to deacons or committees as appropriate.

Salary:  Negotiable


Preaching and Teaching

ü  Personal commitment to sermon preparation, spiritual growth and discipleship.

ü  Preach and lead Sunday morning worship services

ü  Lead the church through special church services, observation of Lord’s Supper and baptism.

ü  Lead the church in a caring ministry for persons in the church and the community

Staff and Session Leadership

ü  Provide leadership support to deacons, church officers, church council, and committees as they perform their assigned responsibilities

ü  Provide leadership and guidance with an eye toward growing the congregation, especially in the area of the children’s ministries

Communicating Vision

ü  Takes time to study, research, and dream about where God is growing and take ESIC in the future

ü  Works with the church leadership, committees, staff and congregation to integrate practical areas where the mission and vision need to grow

ü  Serves as advisory member of all church committees/boards

General Pastoral

ü  Spend time visiting members and regular attendees who are in the hospital, nursing homes, house-bound, etc., as well as prospects.  Work to delegate these responsibilities to deacons and other church lay leaders as appropriate. Work in partnership with the Deacon body to lead and to minister to these individuals

ü  Be in support of and adhere to the doctrinal statement of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and ESIC Baptist Church’s constitution and by-laws

ü  Provide premarital counseling, counseling regarding salvation and spiritual issues, and family Christian guidance for church members

ü  Conduct funeral services and wedding ceremonies

ü  Be reasonably available nights and weekends for emergency pastoral care, delegating these responsibilities to deacons as appropriate

ü  Comply with all established church policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state laws

ü  Cooperate with community, associational, state, and denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern


ü  Help prepare annual congregation report

ü  Participate in the yearly church budget process

o    Seminary degree is preferred, but some seminary education is required

o    Requires commitment to biblical Christian principles and teachings both professionally and personally

o    Requires quality leadership skills

o    Requires the ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form

o    Requires passing criminal, financial and sexual misconduct background checks

Self-directed through ESIC Baptist Church, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and other church management training materials.
